What Photography Gear to Bring (and What to Leave Behind)
To get stunning shots without overpacking, here’s what we recommend:
- DSLR or Mirrorless Camera with manual control.
- Telephoto Lens (300–400mm minimum) — for capturing close-ups without disturbing the gorillas.
- Wide-Angle Lens — ideal for storytelling and showing scale.
- Sturdy waterproof bag — it’s often damp or muddy.
- Extra batteries + memory cards — you won’t want to run out
Settings & Shooting Tips for Gorilla Photography
ISO: Be ready to push ISO to 1600+ in low-light jungle conditions
Shutter Speed: Use 1/500s or faster — gorillas move quickly!
Focus: Use back-button focus or single-point AF to lock in on the eyes
Burst Mode: Helpful when the action happens suddenly
Neutral Clothing: Helps you blend in and stay calm in the group
