Your architectural photography journey begins in the heart of Scotland’s capital as you meet your fellow photographers and guide at a local café near the Royal Mile. We’ll start with a short introduction to the workshop, covering essential techniques such as perspective, symmetry, and how to use natural light to enhance architectural details. We’ll also discuss the unique features of Edinburgh’s historic architecture and set goals for the day.
Once briefed, we’ll begin our photo walk along the Royal Mile, capturing the intricate medieval architecture of this iconic street. You’ll photograph the stonework, narrow closes, and landmarks like St. Giles’ Cathedral, focusing on symmetry and the interplay of light and shadow to emphasise the Gothic features of the buildings.
Next, we’ll head to Edinburgh Castle, one of the city’s most famous landmarks. This towering fortress offers a wealth of opportunities for creative compositions. You’ll work on capturing wide shots of the castle’s imposing exterior and detailed shots of the ancient stone walls and windows. We’ll also take advantage of the panoramic views over Edinburgh from the castle grounds.
After lunch at a café along the Royal Mile, we’ll explore the juxtaposition of historic and modern architecture, starting with Holyrood Palace. You’ll capture the symmetry and grandeur of the palace’s classic architecture, then move on to the Scottish Parliament, where we’ll focus on the striking modern design. This is an excellent opportunity to practice using lines and angles to create dynamic compositions highlighting Edinburgh’s blend of old and new.
As the day ends, we’ll head to Calton Hill for a golden hour shoot. This elevated spot offers stunning panoramic views of historic and modern Edinburgh, perfect for wide-angle shots. You’ll capture iconic structures like the National Monument and the Dugald Stewart Monument, experimenting with the sunset's warm, soft light to create beautiful architectural images.
We’ll wrap up the day with dinner at a nearby restaurant, where we’ll review the day’s work and discuss post-processing techniques for architectural photography, including how to enhance contrast and sharpen details in your images.
We’ll start day two early with a sunrise shoot at Arthur’s Seat, an ancient volcano offering sweeping views of Edinburgh’s skyline. As the first light of the day illuminates both the Old Town and the modern city, you’ll experiment with creating layered compositions that showcase Edinburgh’s diverse architectural styles. This is an ideal session for practising wide cityscapes and zooming in on specific landmarks.
After a hearty breakfast at a local café, we’ll head to Georgian New Town, known for its elegant neoclassical architecture. You’ll work on capturing the symmetry and proportion of the Georgian townhouses, with their uniform façades, grand doorways, and ornate details. We’ll explore how to use leading lines, such as railings and streets, to guide the viewer’s eye through your compositions. Special attention will be paid to how light interacts with the architectural elements, emphasising

We’ll visit Dean Village in the afternoon, a picturesque area nestled by the Water of Leith. Here, you’ll focus on capturing the contrast between the 19th-century cottages and the surrounding natural landscape. We’ll also experiment with reflection shots along the river to add a creative element to your compositions. After a break for lunch in New Town, we’ll continue with personalised feedback to refine your skills for the rest of the day.
Our next stop is the University of Edinburgh, where you’ll capture the fascinating mix of classical and modern architecture, highlighting the balance between old and new. We’ll end the day with a visit to the modern Quartermile development, an area where contemporary buildings blend with historic façades. You’ll practice photographing glass, steel, and stone, using natural light to emphasise texture and form.
On the final day, we’ll walk along the Water of Leith, exploring some of Edinburgh’s hidden architectural gems. You’ll use the water and greenery to complement the surrounding buildings in your compositions, and we’ll also practice long-exposure techniques to capture the movement of the river, adding a dynamic element to your images.
After a lunch break, we’ll regroup for a wrap-up session at a local pub or café. Here, we’ll review your favourite images from the past few days and discuss final post-processing tips for architectural photography. You’ll receive personalised feedback and leave with a deeper understanding of how to continue developing your skills.
